National Handling services – Zimbabwe Dry port, based in Walvis Bay Namibia – NAMPORT and was inaugurated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the 26th of July 2019. The facility size 18 300-square-metre dry port and it will incorporate a state of bonded warehouse, container yard and general warehouse. The Construction on the dry port started in 2015 and was successfully handed over upon inauguration by the two Head of States for Zimbabwean and Namibian governments respectively. It will be used for the storage and handling of the landlocked country’s imports and exports to and from parts of the world.
Zimbabwe has been using ports in South Africa and Mozambique, which resulted in costly and time-consuming trade. Using the port of Walvis Bay is expected to cut costs and time dramatically. The dry port is situated on the south side of the Walvis Bay harbour, and it would go a long way in realising the economic development and integration of the many landlocked SADC countries as the port intends to serve not only Zimbabwe, but other landlocked nations, such as Malawi, Botswana, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
